About
Reading is the doorway, not the destination. Everything below is a working rule, not a slogan — each one shows up in how the club is actually built.
We do not celebrate finishing books. We celebrate what a book makes possible: a better question, a changed habit, a braver decision.
One book at a time, for as long as it deserves. A demanding book may hold us for a quarter or a year. Nobody is racing.
Ideas only become yours once you have argued with them in front of other people. The Reading Room exists for that, not for lectures.
Attendance is not participation, and participation is not completion. We record what actually happened. Your journey is never inflated to make the club look good.
Recognition and rewards follow real involvement. Points cannot be bought, there are no leaderboards, and nothing here is designed to be addictive.
Personal reflections are private by default. Birthdays are celebrated by day and month only — never a birth year, never an age.
We do not host copyrighted books. Rights and permissions are recorded explicitly for every edition we reference, and we would rather point you to a bookseller than cut a corner.
Members are not viewers. The club expects something of you and gives something back, all year.
A book you did not finish still did something to you. MBC treats an unfinished book as a legitimate reading experience, and our records reflect it: we count books explored, not books conquered. Where you tell us what you read yourself, it is labelled clearly as a self-report — because your word is worth recording, and so is the difference.
